Today the Tridents played their first 11 a side game in 3 years with a squad of predominately freshers who have just picked up the sport in September. This considered, even though we lost, the players did an absolutely fantastic job against a battle hardened and experienced Bath Spa squad and should all be proud of their achievements and performance. The potential on show was fantastic. The only way is up from here, building a stronger and better FXU Tridents in years to come!
Throughout the game we saw some real milestones for our rapidly developing players. Brushing off the Bulldogs opening drive score, our defence held their run game in check all day long. Excellent gap control and disciple from our defensive ends and nosetackle left the backs with nowhere to go but straight into big hits from inside linebackers Wilkins #54 and Wrigglesworth #50. Forced into the pass game their QB landed a few lucky passes but an interception from outside linebacker Roberts #42 goes to show that we weren't slacking.
Offensively our runningbacks put the Bulldogs on the back foot, despite stacking the box they couldn't hold RB Baigent #46 and FB Andrews #35 once they gained momentum, partially due to the great blocks put in by our offensive line. Run or pass our line held up, giving QB Batten #8 time to get the ball out to our game reception leader TE Perry #87.
As nearly all of the players first 11 a side game, the true victory was ours. The game's given us a lot to take back to training and correct, but far more to be proud of.
